Next April will take place at Losail circuit in Qatar the first MotoGP grand prix of the history. The organization in ccharge said that the solutions for flood lihghts will be extremly performant for safety and visibility.
Most of the MotoGP riders are agree with the idea but also want to see what a night race could be... So, February 27th 2008 will take place the firsts official MotoGP night tests at Losail.
Valentino Rossi said : “It’s better to race in the day. But they work a lot for the lights and they say it is possible to make it a lot better and to have very good lights and the same safety as in the day. If that’s the case then okay.”
Same fears about safety in the words of Casey Stoner : “They need to make sure they have enough light, and not shining in your eyes.
“If you come out from behind a rider in a shadow, or in a big slipstream pack, and then get hit by the lights it takes your eyes a second to adjust.”
But there is always a balance, and Paul Butler, race director said to MCN : “If a baseball player can hit a white ball at 120mph or whatever under lights then it should be ok. But he added, “Dorna will want to have the riders completely satisfied and content before they go and race there.”
At last, always according to MCN, all classes will race at night, and the MotoGP race is scheduled to be brodcasted between 11h pm and Midnight. Practice sessions will also take place under the moon light (and floodlight...), the aim is to broadcast « the show » in prime time in Europe.
