He is followed by Valentino Rossi and Casey Stoner.

The first important new is the rain that forced riders to ride on a wet track, difficult conditions to learn the track.
A track that was already criticized by Casey Stoner after completed laps on his paddock scooter.
"It's not really a Grand Prix" said he to MCN "track and the right hand corner coming off the back straight is fast, perhaps a little too fast. I think it needs to be improved because it's very bumpy. So it's going to be pretty loose on these bikes. The track is a lot bumpier than Laguna Seca. There are a lot of long corners with a lot of pressure on the front tyre."
"I did two laps on the Ducati test bike and my brains nearly got rattled out through my head."
Now its told! But that did not stop him and Stoner made off course a good lap (third position) but not as good Melandri's lap.
The rider who underwent surgery for cervical problems made a very good lap, and was 1.6 seconds faster than Rossi 2nd.
Fourth of this session Loris Capirossi is followed by Colin Edwards and Nick Hayden, the second HRC rider Dani Pedrosa is only 12th.
At last the fourth ending the top ten are leaded by Randy De Puniet 7th ahead John Hopkins. Anthony West who has already raced on this track and who is good on the wet is only 9th, at last Alex Barros is 10th.
