To stunt or not to stunt : lesson 3-The burnout!
Printable Version Written: 30/04/2007 : 10:30. Read 39656 times (23/day).
The burnout is the oldest trick in the book. Any motorcycle can do a burnout and anyone can do one. It still is just as spectacular as it always was though. The engine revs are high, the rear tyre is squealing like a stung cat and there’s a lot of smoke. But then in Craig Jones world you have donuts, rolling and vertical burnouts…

A burnout is dangerous because if you are not doing it right you’ll burn the clutch. If you do a burnout in your garage you might get poisoned by the smoke. A burnout out of control is dangerous because the rear tyre might suddenly grip and bike will wheelie away without you on it. Usually a little burnout is just harmless fun though.

Technique 1: Stand still and forward-rev the engine-dump the clutch. Why did it burn? Because the rear tyre was overwhelmed by the sudden application of power.

Technique 2: Sit still and relax-get someone to pour oil under the rear tyre-rev the engine and dump the clutch. Why did it burn? Because of the oil dummy!

Technique 3: Apply first gear and roll slowly forward-push your body all the way forwards standing up-rev up the engine-apply the front brake and dump the clutch simultaneously. If you can do this you can do a rolling burnout.

Why did it burn? Applying all your weight forward at the same time as overwhelming the rear tyre with power made the rear tyre spin.

A stuntman like Craig Jones can do burnouts from here to the moon all day long in all directions at all angles and speeds. Controlling the speed with the front brake and the direction by moving the handlebars from side to side and lean. Doing donuts (rings) around another person is spectacular to watch. Then you have the vertical burnout where you have to wheelie the bike up on the wheelie bar first and then burnout.

For the burnouts Craig held me physically back by grabbing the wheelie bar. I just wanted to burn as much rubber as possible fast. To control the burnout I learnt a really good start technique.

I rolled slowly forwards in first gear, pushed my upper body forwards standing up, applied the front brake whilst revving and dumping the clutch simultaneously. There’s a lot going on at the same time, but I found this really easy to do and it saves both tyre and clutch from a lot of unnecessary abuse. Once going it’s all about controlling the speed and direction by applying front brake and pushing the handlebar left and right. If only pushing in one direction you’ll fall off. I enjoyed the rolling burnouts more than the wheelies and stoppies.

I had a great day out with Craig Jones gaining more confidence in my stunting on a proper stunt bike. It takes years of practise to get close to Craig’s ability though. It is absolutely a thrilling experience to watch Craig Jones performing his wild stunts up close.

Highly recommended!

About www.motorcyclists-online.com English version:
At the beginning, in 2001, www.motorcyclists-online.com was an exclusive French Motorcycle website. Now, since September 2005, it has become bilingual: English speaking people are welcome !
We do believe, at www.motorcyclists-online.com, that linguistic boundaries are not a problem when we share the same passion for bikes.
We are currently working on translating all articles and contents, to finish the UK/US version. You will certainly notice some bugs or translation errors: please do not hesitate to advise us by e-mail, Private Message or by posting in the Forum. Your help is welcome !
For the moment, articles which haven’t been human translated are automatically machine translated, which I must confess is not really famous, but faster than human translators.
