April 2007 editorial: Helmet Security
Printable Version Written: 01/04/2007 : 14:03. Read 10928 times (7/day).
The helmet, we all know it, the most important security element for the motorcyclist. It is besides confirmed due to the fact that it is (in most countries) the only property which law makes obligatory. The big manufacturers of the « modern times helmet » expense a lot of money in R&D to develop the new technologies that will give us the best ratio between resistance, comfort, silence and lightness.

If you think there are not much improvements that can be done, just think about these new Bluetooth hi-tech helmets, allowing to phone while riding (well, not a so good idea...). Italian helmet manufacturers are not sleeping, but there is more to come: BMW, the german manufacturer is finalizing a more ambitious helmet, actually in tests stage.

If the results are conclusive, it could be quite a revolution.

A lot of motorcycle technological innovations are coming from the racing world (tyres, motors, electronics, etc). Another source of inspiration is the car (injection, ABS for instance).
And at last, there is aeronautic. BMW works in the three domains and is worldwide known for its quality helmets like SportIntégral, System4 or Airflow.
The big new is AP07 (for Automatik Protektion).

This new adjustable carbon helmet gets Bluetooth, but not only:
MP3 Reader (2 Gigas)
FM receiver with preselected road safety/ trafic channel in the coutries which brodcast it: this system allow the motorcyclist to be get real time road safety news.
A double screen killing definitely the condensation problem (until -10 ° Celsius)
A GPS system.

The GPS will act as an « Argos » like system: it calculates in real time your position and speed, and a sophisticated algorythm can « see » if you have an accident: the system will call a security center (subrscription will badly not be free).

The operator will see your position on this screen, and will talk to you to be sure everything is ok. If not, he can send an ambulance. At this point, we can imagine in the near future a better system wich will check your vital constants in real time...

In the coutries wich allow it (like France), the system, like « Inforad » for example, will inform you when you will approach an automatic radar (software updates will not be free).

Because of the miniaturization of the electronics, the additionnal weight is only 210 g: the power supplie is a battery very similar to the last generation cellphones batteries: 18 hours without the need to recharge. There will be a AC adapter and a 12V car plug (many BMW motorbike are fitted with a 12V car plug).

Of course, all this technology is not really cheap.

BMW is actually patenting his AP07 system...
Price is unknow, but we can guess it will cost at least 1200€.

Technologically your,
Fastfreddy

(NB: for those who may as: NO HEAD UP DISPLAY in this helmet...)

About www.motorcyclists-online.com English version:
At the beginning, in 2001, www.motorcyclists-online.com was an exclusive French Motorcycle website. Now, since September 2005, it has become bilingual: English speaking people are welcome !
We do believe, at www.motorcyclists-online.com, that linguistic boundaries are not a problem when we share the same passion for bikes.
We are currently working on translating all articles and contents, to finish the UK/US version. You will certainly notice some bugs or translation errors: please do not hesitate to advise us by e-mail, Private Message or by posting in the Forum. Your help is welcome !
For the moment, articles which haven’t been human translated are automatically machine translated, which I must confess is not really famous, but faster than human translators.
