| | | March Edito: Moto GP 2006: everybody vs Rossi | Written: 01/03/2006 : 12:56. Read 19492 times (9/day). | The 2005 Moto GP season ended like 2004, 2003, 2002 and 2001... Valentino Rossi won.
No surprises, no last minute cliffhangers, just Rossi winning each year. But, this year, the 2006 GP season might (finally...) see more fights for the first step on the podium.
This season will start at the end of march and there is one question: who will "kill" Rossi?

You may think Rossi will be a little less motivated, because he already focuses on Formula one. Here is what he says about this point: "Formula one has always been second in my thoughts, I will focus on my Yamaha only...". Well, Valentino will really need to focus to remain the first, with Mélandri (2nd in 2005), Hayden (3rd in 2005) and others like Gibernau. About Gibernau, he has just signed with Ducati, but he made pretty nice winter time laps, including an unofficial lap record at Sepang.
Let's see who will fight: - Yamaha Camel : V. Rossi / C. Edwards - Yamaha Tech-3: C. Checa / J. Ellison - Honda Repsol: N. Hayden / D. Pedrosa - Honda Gresini : M. Melandri / T. Elias - Ducati : L. Capirossi / S. Gibernau - Kawasaki : S. Nakano / R. de Puniet (Go for it Randy!!!) - Suzuki : J. Hopkins / C. Vermulen - Honda LCR: C. Stoner
Of course, only champions. But some riders will be missing : - Max Biaggi managed to get everybody angry at him: no bike for him this year, and maybe for the next years. He's 34 years old and he pays for his arrogance and bad faith, but we will miss a talented pilot. Even worse : whereas we thought he signed with Suzuki Alstare in Superbike, no third GSXR was at the first round of the season last week end at the race in Qatar.... So there seems to be no solution for Max in Superbike either.
- Bayliss also "disappeared" from Moto GP, and when we thought he was angry with Ducati, he signed with them for 2006 Superbike, and will be really helpfull. - Barros joined the Honda Klaffi team, it looks like it's the end... If the brasilian rider doesn't make results, he may not ride next year... Having your name starting with a B wasn't a good idea for 2006 Moto GP...
These 3 "old" lions gone, some bikes were waiting for new "I want to win" riders: - Dany Pedrosa, 250cc world champion two times in a row gets Biaggi's Respsol bike. - Chris Vermeulen works with Suzuki in replacement of Kenny Roberts JR, and Randy de Puniet who signed with Kawasaki, replacing german rider Alex Hofmann.
Will we tell who will win? Of course not. But some riders are reaching some kind of age limit: - Carlos Checa is 34 and Tech-3 is one of his last chance to do something great. - Colin Edwards is 32, and he even said "My goal is the second placeof the championship ...". Fitted up with the M1, he will have this year to prove he can be the Doctor's heir apparent.
Some other riders like Nicky Hayden, Shinya Nakano and John Hopkins are are out of their "trial period", and if they want to ride in 2007, they wil have to make results.
Everything is inplace to give us (we hope so!) a real show with suspenses, last minute cliffhangers... And we must not miss this 2006 moto GP season because it's the last time we will see the 1000cc monsters... In 2007, the FIM decided to limit the cubic capacity at 800cc to "avoid speed and power dangers"... I guess it won't change anything, and I'm sure that soon, 1000cc lap records will be replaced with 800cc lap records...
